In the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train roughly every three hours, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. Injuries and fatalities that occur at highway-rail crossings or on railroad property are often preventable.
Education
- MnDOT Rail Safety and Education: The MnDOT Office of Freight and Commercial Vehicles Operations Rail Administration Section monitors the safety performance of more than 4,000 rail-grade crossings along Minnesota's public road system and develops the department's Railroad Highway Grade Crossing Safety Improvement Program.
- Operation Lifesaver: Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail crossings and trespassing on or near railroad tracks.
Campaigns
- Stop. Trains Can't. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Federal Transit Administration, launched the 2020 national rail grade crossing safety campaign to increase public awareness about the dangers around railroad tracks in hopes to reduce fatalities at rail grade crossings.
